Munakkaya Curry
Ingredients
- 4–5 drumsticks (munakkaya), cut into 2-inch pieces
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 green chillies, slit
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- ½ tsp garam masala (optional)
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Preparation
- Wash the drumsticks well.
- Peel the hard ridges lightly if needed.
- Cut into 2-inch pieces.
Cooking Method
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add curry leaves and green chillies.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
- Add turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the drumstick pieces and stir for 2–3 minutes.
- Pour in 1 cup of water, cover the pan, and cook on medium flame for 15–20 minutes until the drumsticks become tender.
- Sprinkle garam masala (optional) and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve hot with steamed rice and ghee.
- It also tastes delicious with chapati or roti.
Tips
- Choose tender drumsticks for the best taste.
- Add a little grated coconut or roasted peanut powder at the end for extra flavour.
- You can also prepare this curry with potatoes or brinjal for a richer variation.
This recipe serves 4 people and takes about 30–35 minutes to prepare.
