Ingredients

  • 4–5 drumsticks (munakkaya), cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, slit
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Preparation

  1. Wash the drumsticks well.
  2. Peel the hard ridges lightly if needed.
  3. Cut into 2-inch pieces.

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add curry leaves and green chillies.
  4. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  5. Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
  6. Add turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the drumstick pieces and stir for 2–3 minutes.
  8. Pour in 1 cup of water, cover the pan, and cook on medium flame for 15–20 minutes until the drumsticks become tender.
  9. Sprinkle garam masala (optional) and cook for another 2 minutes.
  10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot with steamed rice and ghee.
  • It also tastes delicious with chapati or roti.

Tips

  • Choose tender drumsticks for the best taste.
  • Add a little grated coconut or roasted peanut powder at the end for extra flavour.
  • You can also prepare this curry with potatoes or brinjal for a richer variation.

This recipe serves 4 people and takes about 30–35 minutes to prepare.
