Ingredients:
6 slices of bread
2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
2 tablespoons chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios)
1 tablespoon raisins
A pinch of saffron strands (optional)
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make bread halwa:
Remove the crusts from the bread slices and tear them into small pieces or pulse them in a food processor to create breadcrumbs.
Heat ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai over medium heat. Add the bread pieces to the pan and sauté them until they turn golden brown and crisp. Stir continuously to prevent burning.
While sautéing the bread, soak the saffron strands in a tablespoon of warm milk and set it aside.
Once the bread is golden brown, reduce the heat to low and gradually pour in the milk. Stir well to combine the milk and bread. Cook for a couple of minutes until the bread absorbs the milk.
Add sugar to the pan and mix well. Continue cooking on low heat until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Next, add the cardamom powder and the soaked saffron along with the milk. Mix everything together, ensuring the flavors are evenly distributed.
Add the chopped nuts and raisins to the pan. Stir well to incorporate them into the halwa mixture.
Cook for a few more minutes until the halwa reaches a thick, pudding-like consistency. The ghee will start to separate from the mixture, indicating it's done.
Turn off the heat and let the bread halwa cool slightly before serving.
Garnish with additional nuts if desired and serve warm. Bread halwa can be enjoyed as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Remember to adjust the sugar quantity according to your taste preferences. Enjoy your delicious bread halwa!
