Anapakaya Curry Recipe – Traditional Andhra Bottle Gourd Curry

Anapakaya Curry is one of the healthiest and most comforting dishes in Andhra households. Prepared with fresh bottle gourd, onions, tomatoes, and simple Indian spices, this curry is light, nutritious, and delicious. It pairs perfectly with hot steamed rice, chapati, or roti. If you're looking for an easy everyday recipe that is both tasty and healthy, this traditional Anapakaya Curry is a great choice.

Preparation Time

  • Preparation Time: 15 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Serves: 4 People

Ingredients

  • 1 medium Anapakaya (Bottle Gourd)
  • 2 medium onions (finely chopped)
  • 2 tomatoes (finely chopped)
  • 2 green chillies (slit)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

How to Prepare Anapakaya

Wash the bottle gourd thoroughly. Peel the skin and cut it into small cubes. If the seeds are hard, remove them before chopping. Keep the pieces ready for cooking.

Cooking Method

Heat oil in a kadai or deep pan.

Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they begin to splutter, add curry leaves and green chillies.

Now add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn soft and light golden.

Add ginger-garlic paste and cook until the raw smell disappears.

Mix in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.

Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Stir well for a minute.

Now add the chopped bottle gourd pieces and mix well with the masala.

Cover the pan and cook on medium flame for about 15–20 minutes. The bottle gourd releases enough water while cooking, so avoid adding too much water. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Once the bottle gourd becomes soft and fully cooked, switch off the flame.

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
